WBC offer likely to find no taker

THE World Boxing Council has offered the Philippines the opportunity to host title matches for the vacant WBC international flyweight (112-pound) and WBC international straw weight (105-pound) divisions, respectively.

WBC International Championship Committee chairman Mauro Betti conveyed the openings in both weight divisions in a letter to the Games and Amusements Board over the weekend, according to GAB chairman Baham Mitra.

“I would like to spread this information to all promoters,” said Mitra, who has been a key player for the resumption of pro bouts in the county under strict healthy and safety protocols under the present COVID-19 pandemic.

Veteran boxing promoter Liza Elorde, who handles WBC-rated flyweight Gemiel Magramo, said she received the WBC communication from Mitra but cited the hurdles of staging the title clash given the present conditions.

“A title clash would be difficult to organize now. We would have to go outside the NCR bubble and it would be expensive,” noted Elorde, the daughter-in-law of the late boxing great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, whose family owns the Elorde Sports Center in Paranaque where some fight have been staged.
