UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas humbled Ateneo 25-19, 25-23, 25-14 yesterday for its second straight win in the 85th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Rookie opposite hitter Regina Jurado shone for the Golden Tigresses with 15 points, 12 from attacks and three services aces.
Skipper Eya Laure and middle blocker Imee Hernandez also contributed 10 and nine markers, respectively, for UST, which improved to 4-2.
“Masaya siyempre at naka-execute kami ng medyo malinis-linis iyong galaw namin. Medyo may mga talagang kailangan pang i-polish na galaw especially iyong mga gitna namin so na-overcome namin,” Tigresses coach Kungfu Reyes said.
“I think wala kaming service error today so napakasarap sa pakiramdam,” he added.
Vanie Gandler led the Blue Eagles with 13 markers, while team captain Faith Nisperos and Lyann De Guzman added 11 points.
Ateneo absorbed its fourth loss in a row and stumbled to 1-5, the team’s worst start since 2010.
Earlier, Far Eastern University held off University of the East 25-19, 18-25, 25-12, 22-25, 15-5 for its third win.
Chenie Tagaod poured a career-high 23 points along with eight excellent receptions, while Jovelyn Fernandez tallied 22 markers and 13 digs for the Lady Tamaraws.
Jean Asis added 12 hits for FEU, which climbed to 3-3.
KC Cepada scored 18 markers, while Vanessa Bangayan and Janeca Lana contributed 17 and 14 points, respectively, for the Lady Red Warriors, who remained winless in six games.
