VANESSA Sarno had her best performance of the season yesterday (Sunday night in the Middle East), hoisting a total of 249 kilos, but it was only good for fifth place overall in the women’s 71kg division of the IWF Grand Prix II in Doha, Qatar.
Sarno lifted 108kg in the snatch and 141kg in the clean-and-jerk in the elite field ruled by North Korea’s Song Kuk-hyang, who had 120 and 149, kilos respectively, for a total lift of 269 kilos.
Sarno’s total lift was 10 kilos better than the 239 she accomplished when she won three silver medals in the last Asian meet held in early May in Jinju, South Korea, counting her 107 and 132 kilos in the snatch and clean-and-jerk, respectively.
It was also superior to her combined lift of 225 kilos when she took the gold medal in the women’s weightlifting competitions of the 32nd Cambodia Southeast Asian Games.
Asian Games gold medalist Liao Guifang of China was relegated to runner-up with total lift of 264 (116-148) while American Olivia Lyn Reeves settled for third place with 262 (115-147).
Sarno’s compatriot, Kristel Macrohon, finished ninth overall with a total lift of 234 (104-130) in the meet serving as a qualifying competition to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
