Ramirez powers JRU to NCAA athletics win

SOUTHEAST Asian Games relay gold winner Frederick Ramirez scored a pair of record-breaking feats to power Jose Rizal University to a three-peat feat finish in the track and field showcase of the 99th NCAA Season at the PhilSports Complex oval in Pasig City over the weekend.

Giving it all in his final season, Ramirez, 26, broke the 400m and 200m records in two of the three victories he scored in the three-day meet organized by a committee chaired by Herc Callanta of Lyceum of the Philippines U.

Ramirez clocked 46.95 seconds in the 400m to erase the 48.03 mark he set last year and then clocked 21.43 in the 200m to eclipse the 21.93 standard Russel Galleon of JRU registered six years ago.

The record-breakers by Ramirez, who also had a 4x400m relay gold and an 800m bronze, were among the six marks that fell this season, the other four being Arellano U’s Eugene Bongalos in pole vault, Mapua’s Leonard Grospe in high jump seniors, JRU’s Randy Degolacion in the 800m and Perpetual Help’s John Kervy Dianito in javelin juniors.
