Pinoy pair advances in World pool

DISPLAYING excellent chemistry, Jeff de Luna and Roberto Gomez outclassed the female British tandem of Allison and Kelly Fisher 7-3 late Tuesday night in the opening round of the $250,000 Matchroom World Cup of Pool in Milton Keynes, England.

In an interview with Radyo Pilipinas 2, formerly DZSR Sports Radio 918, the two said they relied on their superb breaks to advance to the round-of-16 in the event offering $60,000 (roughly P2.8 million) each to the winning pair.

They were scheduled to face the American tandem of Skyler Woodward and Billy Thorpe in the second round yesterday. The Americans beat Australia’s Justin Sajich and Ivan Li 7-2.

“It (the match) will be a 50-50 match, a great match,” said Gomez, who said they would enjoy a slight edge over their rivals because of their stronger breaks.

“Mas maganda ang break namin sa kanila kaya may mas malaking pag-asang mahulog ang bola sa sargo,” noted Gomez, 42, the 2007 world 9-ball pool tournament runner-up.

Since the tournament began in 2006, with the legendary tandem of Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante ruling the inaugural edition, Filipino cue aces have won the championship three times.

Carlo Biado and Gomez were the losing finalists to Austria’s Mariano He and Albin Ouschan 3-11 in the 2019 tournament in Leicester, England.
