THE Palarong Pambansa organized by the Department of Education and hosted by Cebu City unfolding tomorrow at the newly-renovated Cebu City Sports Center will feature several innovations.
For one, the DepEd has taken the cue of the Philippine Sports Commission in having a separate medal tally for local government units in recognition of their support of the campaigners who will take part in the country’s premier meet for high school and elementary school athletes.
This is on top of the usual overall medal tally for the regions represented in the Palaro, according to DepEd Cebu City assistant schools division superintendent Adolf Aguilar during a recent press briefing held at the Cebu provincial capital.
He said they will cite the top five regions in each of the 34 medal sports, including an overall champion for each discipline, in the meet also supported by Sen. Bong Go, head of the Senate Sports Committee.
Agular bared that dancesport will have its debus as a regular medal sport, a development that will warm the heart of commissioner Edward Hayco of the Philippine Sports Commission, who is credited for its astonishing grown during his time as chairman of the Cebu City Sports Commission.
The Cebu DepEd official disclosed that athletes from the National Academy of Sports and Philippine Schools Overseas will see action in the sportsfest, whose performances, however, will not be counted in the overall medal tally.
