TAGAYTAY. — Karl Eldrew Yulo, judoka Chino Sy Tancontian, hurdler John Cabang Tolentino and two-time Olympic golfer Bianca Pagdanganan are among the nine new Olympic Solidarity scholars gearing up for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino announced this on Monday, saying the athletes will receive stipends under the International Olympic Committee’s Solidarity Program.
Also in the list are boxer Ronel Suyom, fencer Noelito Jose Jr., skateboarder Mazel Alegado, wrestler Allan Rose Gavalez and cross-country cyclist Shagne Yaoyao, who will get $1,000 (around P57,500) a month until they qualify for the LA Olympics.
Receiving subsidies of $1,500 (P86,260) for their build-up and qualifying bid for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano and Cortina, Italy are speed skater Peter Groseclose and Alpine skier Francis Ceccarelli.
Tolentino disclosed that he was able to secure grants of $12,500 (P718,937) for 2025 to the Winter Asian Games gold medalist men’s curling team and women’s beach volleyball team.
Also given special grants of $2,083.33 (P115,000) each for “continental” athletes are canoe kayak’s Ojay Fuentes and Janus Ercilla, Grandmaster Daniel Quizon, WGM Janelle Frayna, karatekas Sakura Alforte and Rebecca Cyril, jiujitsu Annie Ramirez, kickboxer Jansen Pareja, muay thai’s Kylie Mallari and taekwondo jin Tatiana Mangin.
