COLLEGE of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills bet Mel George Faitriz Cadano defeated Mapua University’s Yureeh Panganiban last Wednesday in the elimination round of the 96th NCAA season online junior’s chess tournament.
The win sent Cadano to the Last 16, where he will battle Christian Mark Daluz of Letran.
Perpetual’s Jerome Angelo Aragones and Ronald Canino also moved to the Round of 16 after beating Letran’s Eivan Jacob Cruz and CSB-LSGH’s Joel Iñigo Beltran, respectively.
Arellano University’s Jasper Faeldonia advanced to the next round after defeating Mapua’s Miguel Yvan Sionson.
Only three juniors and three seniors are allowed to play by each participating school. The matches are being played on lichess.org website.
All games will be knockouts, with the next round being the Round of 16, followed by the quarterfinals round and then the semifinals.
Winners of the semis will advance to the finals, while the losers will clash for third place.
The country’s oldest collegiate league pushed through with its new season with online events, with the basketball and volleyball tournaments getting cancelled.
