Cotabato trips Army for 2nd win

BY ABBY TORALBA

THE AMC-Cotabato Spikers scored a 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24 victory over the Philippine Army Troopers yesterday for their second straight win in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the Paco Arena.

Josh Umandal produced 17 points along with 11 excellent receptions for Cotabato, while Edward Camposano fired 12 markers and 12 excellent receptions. Madz Gampong also added eight points.

“We were so erratic at sa sobrang dami ng errors nafru-frustrate na kami,” Cotabato coach Odjie Mamon said. “Iyong second set, I failed to control, hindi ako masyadong nag-(video) challenge kasi may mga calls naman na sigurong winnable kung nag- (video) challenge kaya lang hinayaan ko na rin.”

After winning the opening set, AMC-Cotabato fell short in the second frame but regained its composure in the third frame.

Although the Troopers surged ahead 19-17, AMC-Cotabato charged back and reached set point at 24-22 following a cross court kill from Umandal.

A cross court hit from Gampong finished the set and put AMC-Cotabato ahead 2-1.

In the fourth, both squads battled head on, resulting in a 16-all standoff.

After a 24-all match, a back row attack from Umandal shoved AMC-Cotabato to match point 25-24 before Fauzi Ismail closed the tiff with an off the block hit.

Troopers skipper Benjaylo Labide scored 14 points and 15 excellent receptions, while Patrick Rojas contributed 12 as Army slipped to 1-1.
