SYDNEY-BASED Filipinas striker Sarina Bolden will personally receive her Ms. Football Award from the Philippine Sportswriters Association during the gala PSA Awards night on March at the Diamond Hotel grand ballroom.
“We will be flying in Sarina from Sydney and she will be in Manila at least one day before the PSA Awards dinner,” national women’s football team manager Jeff Cheng said during the presentation of the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy at the Sofitel hotel in Pasay city last Wednesday night.
Bolden was signed last December by the Western Sydney Wanderers women’s squad, a side co-owned by Cheng, which plays in Division 1 of the Australian league.
She is the first recipient of the Ms. Football trophy given by the country’s oldest media organization. The PSA had given Mr. Football awards, among them former Azkal winger Chieffy Caligdong.
Born in Sta. Clara, California, Bolden, 26, has been the spearhead of the Nationals’ offense, playing a pivotal role in the team reaching the semifinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India last year that earned them a historic ticket to the FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in July.
Her scoring skills were on full display in front of hometown fans during the 12th Asean Football Federation Women’s Championship hosted by the country last year at the heritage-rich Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
She scored a hat trick in the 3-1 lacing of Indonesia in the group stage and a brace in the stirring 4-0 shutout of regional powerhouse Vietnam in the semifinals.
