SBU big man bound for Japan

THE Japan B.League is fast turning out to be the destination for Filipino cagers.

San Beda University big man Kemark Cariño is the latest local talent to bring his act to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Cariño was signed by Aomori Wat’s in the second division of the B.League as an Asian import, the team announced yesterday.

The 6-foot-8 Cariño was a member of the all-amateur Gilas Pilipinas crew in the second window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in Bahrain last November where he wound up with a total of three points, three rebounds, and an assist in an emphatic two-game sweep of Thailand.

He is part of the 20-man national team training pool toughening up at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna for the FIBA Asia Cup next month in Indoneisa.

Cariño, 23, also saw action for Gilas Youth in 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship in Tehran.

Playing second fiddle to Cameroonian Donald Tankoua, Cariño averaged 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in the last NCAA cage wars in 2019.
