THE centerpiece cage wars of the NCAA 96th season remains a long shot.
League Management Committee chair Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of Letran yesterday admitted the prospects of holding the basketball tourney is bleak due to the lingering woes posed by an unseen but vicious enemy.
“Tulad din sa naiisip ninyo,” Calvo told Malaya-Business Insight. “Hangang wish lang tayo.”
The country’s oldest collegiate league is plodding on with its new season with online and hybrid events due to the health risks and uncertainties brought about by the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic.
Even the hybrid events such as the skills challenge and dunk tilt are unlikely to push through.
Set to be hosted by Letran, the 96th season was supposed to be launched this month but has been reset to start virtually next month.
“Same pa rin, June (virtual opening),” Calvo said.
Among the options the league considered was holding its season in a bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.
The plan was scrapped due to the whopping P40 million estimated cost and the absence of the green light from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, however.
