Converge buys Alaska franchise

SIGNED, sealed, and delivered.

The PBA yesterday formally announced the sale of the Alaska franchise to Converge ICT of billionaire Dennis Anthony Uy, a development that will keep the pro league’s roster of teams intact at 12 next season.

Commissioner Willie Marcial made the announcement in a press conference at halftime of Game 1 of the semifinals duel between Magnolia and Meralco at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

Marcial was joined by Aces governor Dickie Bachmann and former PBA chief Chito Salud, who will be Converge’s representative to the board.

“I wish to thank the PBA board of governors led by chairman Ricky Vargas, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial and Alaska team owner Mr. Wilfred Uytengsu for the invaluable and unqualified support they have lent Converge in realizing its quest to become a member of the PBA,” Uy said in a statement read by Salud.

“We are excited to commence our journey in building a track record and legacy of competitiveness, innovation, character, discipline, devotion and sportsmanship worthy of the support and respect of the PBA.”

The internet services provider’s acquisition of one of the league’s most fabled ballclubs was approved by an 11-0 vote by the board.

Alaska won 14 titles, including a rare grand slam in 1996, in a 35-year stint in the PBA and was known for its rich winning culture and integrity.

Salud thanked PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan for not rejecting Converge’s entry to the PBA despite the firm being a business rival.

“In the mind of Mr. Dennis Uy, Mr. Pangilinan is a true ambassador of the sport. Thus, the PBA is proud of this sporting gesture,” Salud said.

“Converge will be a strong and active member of the PBA. We look forward to contributing our share in delighting and hopefully exceeding the expectations of PBA fans for topnotch sports entertainment.”
