Bombers test grit of Stags

By Abby Toralba

JOSE Rizal University eyes solo second when it battles San Sebastian College today while College of St. Benilde takes on University of Perpetual as NCAA Season 99 action resumes at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.

The Bombers will plunge into action at 2 p.m. on a high after posting a 71-65 win over the Altas last Saturday for a 4-1 card in a tie with the Mapua Cardinals at 4-1.

The Blazers clash with the Altas at 4 o’clock, hoping to go on a mini-streak after routing the Stags 87-72 also last Saturday.

The Kalentong-based charges of coach Louie Gonzales are out to inch closer to pace-setting Lyceum of the Philippines, the league’s last unbeaten team.

Despite their early success, Gonzales has repeatedly reminded his charges that there is still a lot of work to be done.

“We haven’t achieved anything yet,” said Gonzales.

One bright hope for JRU is rookie Shawn Argente, who had a superb 17-point performance the last time out that he highlighted with five three-pointers.

The former Squire has been filling the void left by skipper Ry dela Rosa, who remained a doubtful starter due to health concerns.

“He has proven himself capable,” Gonzales said of his prized rookie.
