Big men bolster Blazers

FULL-STRENGTH.

That’s what fans can expect as College of St. Benilde eyes redemption in the 101st NCAA basketball tournament set to kick off on Oct. 1.

The Blazers have reasons to feel optimistic, with reigning MVP Allen Liwag and veteran transferee Shawn Umali out to lead their charge.

“I think Allen has been improving a lot as a player. There’s no doubt about that but what I’m hoping for this year is we won’t have to rely on him too much. I know he has another big man to help him in Shawn,” CSB coach Charles Tiu said. “So, there are a few more weapons right now. I don’t want to over-exert him. I’m sure he has goals to win the MVP again but I’m telling him that we have to look at the bigger picture; what matters is we win the championship.

“So, his growth as a person, as a player, I can’t complain but my goal is to get him a bit healthier this year,” he added.

The 6-foot-6 Liwag captured the top individual award last season, along with the Defensive Player of the Year plum, after averaging 14.61 points, 11.28 rebounds, 2.33 assists, and 1.22 blocks per game.

Tiu, now serving his fifth season for the green-and-white crew, shared that Umali’s addition will surely provide help as he is also seen as one of the leaders of the team.

Umali, who had a stint with Lyceum two seasons ago, averaged 11 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.6 blocks per game.

“I think having Shawn is a big plus for us. Obviously, he’s another guy who’s so physical, post-presence, good defender and he’s one of our leaders also. So, he’ll be a huge help for us,” Tiu said.

“Kahit na may ma-foul-trouble si Allen or what, we have another big guy and we can also play them together, we have that option. So, I’m happy that we have Shawn in our squad.”
