Auckland is base camp of Filipinas

THE Filipinas will have Auckland, New Zealand as their “home away from home” or team base camp in the lead-up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July next year, the Philippine Football Federation announced yesterday.

The PFF said this is the first time the International Football Federation, the world football body known by its French acronym FIFA, is having dedicated “TBCs” that will include a training site and accommodations.

In the case of the charges of Australian coach Alen Stajcic, who are set to make their World Cup debut, it will be the Olympic Park and Movenpick Hotel, respectively.

Meanwhile, UAAP varsity squads UP and FEU beat separate rivals in the semifinals over the weekend and will battle for the championship of the Philippine Football Federation Women’s Cup this Saturday at the PFF national training center pitch in Carmona, Cavite.

The UP Lady Maroons stunned the Kaya booters 5-4 on penalties after the two sides battled to a scoreless standoff in regulation and extra time while the FEU Lady Tamaraws dumped Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation 3-0 in setting up a title showdown.

In a statement, FIFA chief women’s football officer Sarai Bareman said that new conditions for the Women’s World Cup for the first time will ensure that “teams and players are provided with the best possible platform to perform at their peak.
