This policy expected to earn the ire of riders

MOTORCYCLE riders, beware!

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday said it will impose a fine of P1,000 on motorcycle riders who take shelter under overpasses when it rains.

MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes said the agency will implement this policy starting August 1.

“We are giving them sufficient notice, sufficient time dahil ito ay batas na kailangan nating ipatupad (because this is a law that we have to implement),” Artes told GMA7’s Unang Balita, adding that riders will be cited for traffic obstruction.

He said motorcycle riders can temporarily stop and seek shelter under overpasses only to put on their raincoats before proceeding to their destinations.

He said there are designated motorcycle lay-by areas, like the one under the Quezon Ave. flyover, where riders can seek shelter during heavy downpours.

Artes explained that aside from causing traffic congestion, riders staying under overpasses for a long period of time also face danger, saying they could be hit by another vehicle.

Aside from designated motorcycle lay-by areas, Artes said his office would also ask owners of gasoline stations to install tents in their premises where riders can take shelter when it rains.

Last July 11, the MMDA posted on its website photos of motorcycle riders gathering under flyovers during heavy rains.
