Public warned of more respiratory ailments

AN INFECTIOUS disease expert yesterday warned the public against the threat of other infectious respiratory diseases aside from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as families and friends start to gather for the holiday season.

In a televised public briefing, Dr. Edsel Salvaña said infectious diseases that could be transmitted during family gatherings and reunions include flu, cough, and colds.

“Of course, the pandemic is not yet over so COVID remains a threat. This means we really need to be careful,” said Salvaña.

To avoid getting sick and missing out on the celebrations, Salvaña urged the public, especially the vulnerable sector, to get the necessary vaccines.

“Make sure that you have updated vaccines, not just against COVID-19 but also against flu and pneumonia, especially the elderly,” said Salvaña.

He also encouraged the public to continue practicing the minimum public health standards as it has proven to be effective not just for COVID-19.

“Wearing of face masks and practicing other minimum public health standards remains important. If one coughs and you have no face masks, you may get infected,” he said.

Lastly, for those with comorbidities and senior citizens, Salvaña dissuaded them from joining crowded events as much as possible.

“Let us avoid joining activities where there will be too many people, as much as you can,” said Salvaña.

In the days leading to Christmas, families, friends, and companies are expected to hold parties and other gatherings with majority of COVID-19 restrictions already lifted. — Gerard Naval
