A PUBLIC health advocacy group yesterday called for the removal of all Designated Smoking/Vaping Areas (DSVAs) to increase the protection of the public from smoking/vaping-related illnesses.
In a statement, Health Justice Philippines (Health Justice) urged lawmakers to consider amending laws that allow the establishment of DSVAs indoors or outdoors.
“A law mandating a 100% smoke-and vape-free environment will keep everyone safe from respiratory diseases and other diseases associated with tobacco use,” the group said.
“(There is a need) for wider smoke-and vape-free spaces by prohibiting the establishment of DSVAs to further protect the public,” it added.
The group said removing DSVAs will help avoid illnesses caused by second-hand smoke.
“If our laws are revised to remove the establishment of smoking and vaping areas in public areas, then our people are assured that the public places they go to are safe from harmful effects of tobacco,” it said.
“DSVAs are allowed in our laws, thereby weakening the protection afforded to the public from harmful exposure to tobacco products,” it added.
Under the law, DSVA refers to an area of a building or conveyance, either in an open space or a separate area, where smoking and vaping are allowed.
The law also provides that DSVAs must have no opening that will allow air to escape to the smoke/vape-free areas; not be located in or within 10 meters from entrances, exits, or any place where people pass or congregate; and not more than one in every establishment.
