Poe to LTO: Address backlog of license plates

SEN. Grace Poe yesterday said the Land Transportation Office should come up with clear plans to address the backlog in the license plates of vehicles.

Poe issued the statement after the Commission on Audit, in its 258-page audit report on the 2022 transactions of the Department of Transportation released last July 13, disclosed that the LTO has a backlog of 11.86 million license plates for motorcycles and 1.8 million pairs for motor vehicles.

Poe, who chairs the Committee on Public Services, said it is “frustrating” that motorists bear the shortage of plates “even after paying for them.”

“Vehicle registration is already a big burden due to the long lines and you still end up going home without a license plate,” Poe said in a statement.

“The LTO must put in place a catch-up plan to address the millions of vehicle plates backlog. It must crack the whip, if necessary, on private providers who fail to deliver. The absence of a vehicle plate poses security risks. It is also shortchanging motorists who have shelled out money for the plates,” she added.
