INDEX crimes or crimes against persons and property have decreased by 10.14 percent during the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year, the PNP reported yesterday.
“There’s a decrease of more than 2,000 (index crime) cases,” PNP spokesman Col. Jean Fajardo told a press briefing at the PNP national headquarters at Camp Crame.
Making up index crimes are thief (robbery), rape, physical injury, murder, carnapping of motorcycles, carnapping of motor vehicles, robbery, and homicide.
Data provided by Fajardo showed there were 18,660 index crime cases recorded from January to June this year.
The number is lower by 10.14 percent or 2,105 cases compared to the 20,765 index crime cases recorded by the PNP during the same period last year.
Specifically, thief (robbery) went down from 6,506 to 5,899 cases; rape from 5,025 to 4,111; physical injury from 2,893 to 2,314; murder from 2,117 to 2,077; carnapping of motorcycles from 998 to 910; and carnapping of motor vehicles from 173 to 123.
However, there was an increase in murder cases (from 2,434 to 2,601 cases) and homicide (from 511 to 526).
“All decreased, except for robbery and homicide, if I am not mistaken,” said Fajardo.
“As a whole, we recorded a (10.14 percent) decrease in what we call index crimes, composed of crimes against persons and crimes against property,” Fajardo added.
Fajardo said the PNP is considering the inclusion of cybercrimes as part of index crimes.
Last week, the PNP reported there were 6,250 cybercrime incidents in Metro Manila during the first six months of the year, 152 percent higher compared to 2,477 incidents recorded during the same period last year.
“We are studying if these cybercrime-related offenses can be included as index crimes to address it because the (cases) are high,” said Fajardo.
