New COA chief to auditors: Strive to earn public trust

AUDITORS are the government’s partners in ensuring economic and efficient use of public resources.

This was the centerpiece of Commission on Audit Chair Gamaliel Cordoba’s message to auditors and other personnel of the audit agency in his first flag-raising ceremony last Monday.

The new COA chief said the audit body’s role has become even more crucial as the country tries to recover fast from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying limited resources must be spent “economically, efficiently and expeditiously.

“The Commission should facilitate this by enabling agencies to do their jobs better. We will be partners in rebuilding our country. We will be enablers,” Cordoba said.

In return, he declared a commitment to make personnel welfare the cornerstone of his administration, noting that the case loads of auditors can be made lighter by filling up vacant positions and enabling them to obtain training to remain compliant with international standards.

Cordoba also called on COAns to work as a single “formidable unit,” encouraging everyone to “bring out the best in each of us.

“We shall constantly strive to earn the public’s trust as the Commission fulfills its mandates, upholding an honest, professional and dignified approach to all our daily tasks,” the new chairperson said.

Cordoba joined COA after a 13-year stint as head of the National Telecommunications Commission, replacing former chair Jose Calida who resigned last October 4.
