MAGNITUDE 5.5 earthquakes hit the provinces of Cagayan and Surigao del Sur yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said it is not expecting damage from the quakes which are tectonic in origin.
However, aftershocks are anticipated.
The quake in Cagayan occurred at 1:45 p.m. Its epicenter was some 50 km northwest of Calayan town. It had a depth of 32 km, and was felt at Intensity V in Calayan and Intensity II in Pamplona town, also in Cagayan, said Phivolcs.
The quake in Surigao del Sur was recorded at 12:25 a.m. Its epicenter was some 134 km northeast of Lingig town in Surigao del Sur.
It had a depth of 19 km, said Phivolcs.
Shaking was felt at Intensity II in Lingig and in Bayabas town, also in Surigao del Sur; and Intensity I in Bislig City, also in Surigao del Sur.
