Rioters pushed through a police barricade, hurled stones, and set a backhoe on fire.
Several anti-riot cops sustained minor injuries during the scuffle.
The police dispersed water and a long-range acoustic device to drive the rioters back.
Around 10 protesters have been taken into custody by the police.
According to a police official, the Manila Police District is investigating the possibility that masked individuals involved in protest violence were paid to provoke unrest.
Earlier, near Ayala Bridge, a similarly clad group of masked protesters clashed with police after setting a shipping container on fire that was blocking their path.
Trouble erupted on Ayala Bridge after a group of masked men set the truck’s tires on fire, leading to a confrontation with police.
Protesters hurled bottles, paint cans, and rocks at police officers, who used their riot shields for protection from the flying debris.
DZBB reporter Manny Vargas sustained a minor facial injury after a rock struck him while he was covering the protest.
Following the initial confrontation, the rioters proceeded to Mendiola and engaged in another clash with the police.
