DAYS after being overwhelmed with patients, the Emergency Room (ER) of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) is now more manageable.
In a social media post, PGH Director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi said the situation in their ER has seen stark improvement compared to last week.
“The situation is more manageable now. The emergency room as of this morning has 199 patients,” said Legaspi.
Last week, the ER population of PGH exceeded its capacity by 400 percent, with more than 300 patients crammed into a facility for 75 individuals.
This prompted the PGH to issue an advisory urging patients to seek medical attention from other hospitals as its ER was already overwhelmed.
In response, the Department of Health (DOH) announced the readiness of 20 DOH-operated hospitals in the National Capital Region (NCR) to accommodate PGH patients unable to go to the Manila-based hospital.
In a separate social media post, the DOH assured its readiness to assist other hospitals that would face similar predicaments.
“The DOH will continue to assist hospitals in the country, like PGH, in responding to diseases,” said the DOH.
“The agency has prepared for surge capacity in its hospitals due to the expected increase in leptospirosis cases, for example, this rainy season,” said the DOH.
