Military intensifies ops vs NPA in Mindoro

THE military has vowed to intensify operations against New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Mindoro provinces after the death of three soldiers, including a junior officer who is the son of a former Army chief, during an encounter with the insurgents in Oriental Mindoro last Tuesday.

“This tragedy is heavy for all of us, but it only strengthens our resolve,” said Maj. Gen. Ramon Zagala, commander of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, in a statement.

Zagala said NPA rebels continue to “threaten lives, exploit civilians, and stand in the way of the progress our people deserve.”

“We will not let them succeed. We remain determined to bring lasting peace to Mindoro and end this decades-long insurgency,” Zagala.

Soldiers figured in a series of clashes with NPA rebels in Barangay Lantuyang 2 in Baco, Oriental Mindoro, leading to the death of three soldiers and the wounding of three others.

One of the fatalities was 1Lt. Marky John Alberto, son of retired Lt. Gen. Macairog Alberto, who served as Army chief from October 2018 to December 2019.

“To the families of our fallen heroes, we grieve with you. We will honor their memory by pressing on – stronger than ever – until the people of Mindoro can live free from fear and in peace,” said Zagala.

Zagala said the 2nd ID is “deeply saddened” by the loss of the three soldiers and wounding of three other troops.

“They gave their lives serving the people, keeping our communities safe, and working for peace in Southern Tagalog. Their courage and sacrifice will always be remembered,” said Zagala.

The Philippine Army paid tribute to the slain soldiers, who it said paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the people of Oriental Mindoro from NPA atrocities.

“Their bravery is a testament to their commitment to their sworn duty to protect the Filipino nation against any form of terrorism and violence, even in the farthest conflict-affected communities,” said Army spokesman Col. Louie Dema-ala.

Dema-ala said the Army also honors the “gallantry” of the wounded personnel.

“Their bravery will continue to ignite our troops’ courage, and will serve as an inspiration to further press on in the fight to eliminate these terrorists,” said Dema-ala.

Dema-ala said the Army “will relentlessly track the rebels” so that justice will be served for the families of our brave soldiers, and for the Filipino people who fell victim to their terroristic acts.”
