Comelec ups target for voter registration to 1.5M

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is setting a higher target of 1.5 million for the ongoing 10-day voter registration period.

Comelec chairman George Garcia yesterday said they have already exceeded their original target of one million applicants, noting that 1,001,970 individuals have filed their applications in only the first five days of the registration period.

“We expect that in the remaining five days of voter registration, there will be even more. Maybe we will reach 1.3 million to 1.5 million people who will register,” he said.

Comelec data showed that 145,226 individuals sought to be registered on Day 1; followed by the 211,908 applicants in Day 2; another 213,094 registrants on Day 3; 199,244 more on Day 4,; and 232,498 applicants on Day 5.

Having the highest number of applicants is Calabarzon with 138,843; followed by Central Luzon with 113,904.

In the National Capital Region, the Comelec said 79,517 have sought to become registered voters.

Garcia said they are pleasantly surprised that the 1 million initial target of voter registrants was breached in just the first five days of the voter registration period.

“This is the largest number of applicants in a very short period of time in the history of the Comelec. We are happy that in five days, we have more than 1 million,” he said.

“They really want to participate in the elections. They want to have a voice on who gets elected in their barangays,” he added.
