THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday said its preparations for the December 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) shall continue despite the enactment of Republic Act No. 12232, which reset the polls to November next year.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed the law on Wednesday.
In an online interview, Comelec chairman George Garcia said the poll body will not yet suspend their preparations for the December 1 polls as they are anticipating that the new law will be questioned before the Supreme Court.
Poll lawyer Romulo Macalintal has said that he would question the legality of the postponement of the December 2025 BSKE before the SC if Marcos signs the law.
“It’s almost certain that someone will question the legality of the law. We should wait and see,” Garcia said.
“If someone is going to SC, I hope the picture will be clearer between this time until September,” he also said.
Garcia said the Comelec’s “readiness for the BSKE (is) at 8 to 8.5 (out of 10), be it for December 1 or in case it’s reset for next year.”
RA 12232 effectively moved the December 1 polls to the first Monday of November 2026 as it set a new four-year term to barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials.
