8 of 10 Pinoys say Sara should face impeachment trial

EIGHT to 10 Filipinos, or 80 percent, said Vice President Sara Duterte should face the impeachment court trial and clear her name while 14 percent disagreed, the results of the July 12 to 17 Tugon ng Masa survey of the OCTA Research showed.

The survey, which involved 1,200 adult respondents nationwide with a margin of error of ±3 percent, showed that 97 percent of the public are also aware or have seen or heard something about the impeachment, while two percent said they are not aware and one percent could not say if they had heard or not heard anything about the impeachment.

The survey result was released days after the Supreme Court ruled that the impeachment against Duterte was unconstitutional.

The polling firm said the 80 percent is slightly higher than the 78 percent in April, which said that the Vice President should face the impeachment trial.

The results also showed that six percent were undecided on the issue and one percent refused to answer.

Majority of the respondents across geographical location (69 percent to 92 percent) and socio-economic status (78 percent to 80 percent) said Duterte should face the impeachment trial, with the highest coming from the Visayas (892 percent) and classes ABC and D (8 percent each).

The polling firm said that of those who agreed, the majority or 59 percent said the Vice President must address the charges, clear her name, and prove herself worthy of her office.

This sentiment is shared by the majority across geographical locations (53 percent to 70 percent) and socio-economic status (55 to 67 percent), with the highest among respondents from Metro Manila (70 percent) and Class E (67 percent).

The other reasons include the belief in the validity of the charges filed against Duterte (21 percent) and to enable the Vice President to run in the 2028 elections (16 percent). Three percent do not know.

The polling firm also found that the reasons of the 14 percent that disagreed with Duterte’s facing the impeachment were: the impeachment is just as political fight between the Marcos and Duterte camps (44 percent); that Duterte is not corrupt and they do not believe in the charges (33 percent); and that the Vice president should just focus on serving the nation (29 percent).

Two percent said they do not know while another two percent refused to give an answer.
