THE No. 2 man of the Philippine Army has been named commander of an Army division that is leading the fight against the communist New People’s Army and other threat groups in the Bicol region.
Army vice commander Maj. Gen. Adonis Bajao took the helm of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division (ID) on Sunday during rites led by Army chief Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr at the 9th ID headquarters in Camarines Sur.
Bajao succeeded Brig. Gen. Jaime Abawag who assumed as acting 9th ID commander, in concurrent capacity as 9th ID vice commander, last November following the retirement of then 9th ID commander Maj. Gen. Alex Luna.

There was still no word as to who will succeed Bajao, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1989, as the Army’s vice commander.
Bajao held key positions in the past, including vice commander of the 9th ID, commander of the 1002nd Brigade and Joint Task Force General Santos; and 8th ID assistant chief of staff for civil military operations, among others.
Abawag is a member of the PMA Class 1990. He served as commander of the 902nd Brigade.
Brawner urged personnel of the 9th ID to sustain the military’s gains in the fight against the NPA in the Bicol region.
