More than P68M aid provided to ‘Karding’ victims: DSWD

MORE than P68.37 million worth of aid had been provided to families affected by super typhoon “Karding,” the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said yesterday.

DSWD said P52.65 million came from the department, P15.429 from the local government units (LGUs), and P292,370 from private partners.

Data from the DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) showed that as of October 4, there were still 9,601 families or 46,975 persons displaced in Regions I (Ilocos), III (Central Luzon), IV-A (Calabarzon), V (Bicol), and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

DSWD said 817 families (3,721 persons) are currently taking temporary shelter in 24 evacuation centers in Regions III, CALABARZON, and V, and 8,784 families (43,254 persons) are staying with their relatives or friends.

There were 46,033 houses damaged — 7,424 that are totally damaged and 38,609 that are partially damaged.

Families with partially damaged homes will receive P5,000 financial assistance while those with totally damaged houses will get P10,000.

Meanwhile, Caritas Philippines has issued a “solidarity appeal” for dioceses heavily affected by the calamity.

According to Caritas Philippines, it is calling on all archdioceses and dioceses in the country to send their assistance to the severely affected dioceses of Infanta, Cabanatuan, and Malolos.

“We are launching our Alay Kapwa Solidarity Appeal to all dioceses so we can better respond to the emerging needs: emergency shelter, food, and water,” said Caritas Philippines.

The humanitarian arm of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said the assistance to be collected shall be a good follow up to their initial aid deployed as soon as the typhoon hit.

Caritas Philippines noted that it immediately reactivated its emergency surge team with the concerned diocesan social action centers to monitor and coordinate the needed response. — With Gerard Naval
