THE recent calamities that have hit the Davao Region are expected to be factors in the ongoing deliberation of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) – Region XI, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
In a press briefing, Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said there is a strong likelihood that the recent flooding and earthquake that hit the region would be among those considered in discussions on increasing the minimum wage rate in Davao Region.
“The region has been affected by the low-pressure area, flooding, as well as an earthquake.
This is likely the reason why the board is being careful because they are considering their effects, especially to small companies because it will be difficult for them,” said Laguesma.
“There is that real need to balance the financial needs of workers and the capacity of employers to pay given the major damages that occurred in the area,” he added.
Last December, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit the Davao Region.
Continuous rains brought by a low-pressure area (LPA) have also caused massive flooding
