Bishop asks faithful: Fast from sin this Lent

WHILE Catholics are required to fast this Lent, they are also being urged to make a bigger sacrifice during the 40-day religious observance.

“The best fasting is to fast from sin. We often commit sins, right? So, avoid committing sin,” said Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara, vice president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), in a report of CBCP News.

The Pasig prelate said the people are being encouraged to engaged in more significant activities.

“The challenge really is for us to do more than do less – more time for prayer, do more alms giving… And this will lead us to the path of holiness,” he said.

Lent is an annual solemn Catholic religious observance commemorating the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan.

During the Lenten Season, all Catholics are strongly urged to pray, fast, and do acts of charity.

This year, the Lenten Season began on February 22 with the observance of Ash Wednesday. It will end on April 9 with the celebration of Easter Sunday.
