FOR the first time in nearly a month, less than 10,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health yesterday but 51 more lost their battle against the dreaded virus.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said total infections in the country climbed to 3,569,665, counting the 9,493 latest new cases, the lowest in the country since January 5 when 10,775 cases were reported.
The death toll rose to 54,054 for a case fatality rate of 1.51 percent.
The current positivity rate in the Philippines stood at 28.8 percent among the 31,053 tested samples on January 30.
Active cases dropped to176,053 from 190,818 last Monday, with over 164,000 mild cases and 6,100 asymptomatic cases.
The DOH also reported 24,210 additional recoveries, bringing the total survivors to 3,339,558.
A policewoman from Zamboanga City died of COVID-19, bringing to 127 the number of police personnel who have succumbed to the virus, according to the PNP.
The 39-year-old chief master sergeant, assigned with the Plans and Programs Unit of the Zamboanga City police station, died at the Zamboanga City Medical Center last January 26.
The fatality, who was fully vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine against COVID-19 last August, tested positive for the deadly virus last January 24. She had comorbidities due to renal disease and diabetes.
The PNP also reported 208 new COVID-19 infections among its personnel, up by 76 from the previous day.
This brought to 48,353 the number of total COVID-19 cases in the PNP since 2020 — 1,489 active cases, 46,737 recoveries and 127 deaths.
PNP chief Dionardo Carlos extended his condolences to the family of the policewoman, saying: “The PNP leadership assures the family of the PNP personnel of full financial support and social benefits, my condolences.”
The number of police personnel who have been fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 increased to 218,487, which is equivalent to 97.02 percent of the total PNP strength. — With Victor Reyes
