9 of 10 Pinoys welcoming 2023 with renewed hope

NINE out of 10 Filipinos or 92 percent are welcoming 2023 with renewed hope while four out of 10 said that Christmas this year is either more prosperous or as prosperous as last year.

The Pulse Asia survey, which involved 1,200 adult respondents nationwide with a ±2.8 percent margin of error, showed that 92 percent said they will face the new year with hope while 0.1 percent said they are without hope, and 8 percent could not say if they are hopeful or not.

The survey also showed that 43 percent said their Christmas this year would be more prosperous, while 42 percent said it is as prosperous as last year, 10 percent said it is not as prosperous last year, and 6 percent said it is poorer this year.

The survey, conducted from November 27 to December 1, was done on the heels of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) report that inflation in the country hit 7.7 percent last October —  the highest since December 2008 — and Manila Electric Company imposed a power rate hike of P0.0844 per kilowatt-hour starting November 2022 due to higher generation charge arising from higher charges from its Power Supply Agreements (PSAs).

Pulse Asia found out that majority (58 percent) of the respondents in the National Capital Region (NCR) and a near majority from Mindanao and socio-economic class ABC (48 percent each) said Christmas this year is more prosperous.

Forty-three percent from Class E, 41 percent each from Classes D and Luzon, and 25 percent from the Visayas said Christmas this year is “the same as last year that was prosperous.”

Almost all respondents from the Visayas (99 percent) are welcoming 2023 with hope, followed by those from NCR (94 percent) and Luzon and Mindanao (89 percent each).

More respondents from Class E (94 percent) are facing the new year with hope, followed by those from Class D (92 percent) and Class ABC (86 percent).
