THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) yesterday reported one death due to tropical storm “Dodong” which exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) last Saturday.
The fatality was from a landslide in Antipolo City last Saturday, who was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.
“A part of a hill in the said area collapsed due to heavy rains, a house wherein the reported victim resided was hit by a big stone,” the NDRRMC said.
The incident is subject to validation, the NDRRMC added.
Dodong intensified into a tropical depression on Thursday last week and made landfall in Dinapigue in Isabela the following day. It further intensified to a tropical storm on Saturday morning and exited PAR Saturday afternoon.
While already out of PAR, Dodong continues to enhance the southwest monsoon that is bringing rains to some parts of the country, including Metro Manila.
NDRRMC said Dodong has affected 9,223 families or 26,331 individuals in five regions — Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Western Visayas.
Of the number, 1,026 families (1,805 individuals) remain still displaced as of yesterday morning, the NDRRMC said.
Meanwhile, a low pressure area (LPA) east of Mindanao is forecast to intensify into a tropical depression, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
As of yesterday morning, the LPA was some 1,070 km east of northeastern Mindanao or still outside PAR, said PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina.
The weather disturbance developed into an LPA on Sunday afternoon, from a cloud cluster, according to PAGASA.
“This low pressure area, based on our latest data, will possibly intensify into a tropical depression in the next one or two days,” said Badrina.
Badrina said the LPA is not affecting any part of the country yet.
If the LPA develops into a tropical depression and enters the PAR, it will be named “Egay,” the country’s fifth tropical cycle for the year and second for this month.
