Actor Derek Ramsay shared the emotional journey of the recent miscarriage experienced by his wife, Ellen Adarna, during a press conference for his Metro Manila Film Festival entry, “Kampon,” held at Max’s Restaurant on Sct. Tuazon last Monday.
Ramsay recounted the rollercoaster of emotions they went through when Ellen missed a period while on a trip to Spain. Their joy was short-lived, however, as Ellen experienced spotting on their return to the Philippines. Their subsequent doctor’s visit delivered the heartbreaking news that the pregnancy did not progress.
In a somber tone, Derek admitted he is still reeling from what happened a few weeks ago.
“Medyo lutang pa kasi ako. Medyo hindi ko alam ang ma-fe-feel kasi rollercoaster, super happy tapos lowest of the lows.”
He recalled the uncertainties they faced, with doctors unable to confirm whether Ellen had fully miscarried. “She’s pregnant, she’s not pregnant. Hindi masabi ng doctor na hindi pa sya talaga nalalaglag. Ang daming tanong na hindi masagot. The doctor said to be safe so they still considered her pregnant. Pag lapag naming Spain direcho na kaming hospital, ultrasound. So it’s super rollercoaster of emotions. Priority is Ellen is ok. She’s safe and good thing is least now we know we can still be pregnant.”
Despite the devastating news, Derek found solace in knowing that they can still conceive.
He humorously mentioned, “Lumalangoy pa itong mga alaga ko,” adding, “We are going to try. Pero sabi nila the best is not really to try… Again, that’s my wish. I know my mom has been praying for it so sobrang gandang gift sa kanya. Unfortunately…. Pero sure na ‘yan next year.”
Derek plays an ex-cop who is married to Beauty Gonzalez and had their lives upended with the entry of a child (Erin Espitiru) into their lives. Derek said working with 7-year-old sweet and smart Erin has made him re-think his wish for a brother for his son Austin and Elias, Ellen’s son with John Lloyd. Reflecting on his role in “Kampon,” where he got to bond with Erin, who portrays his daughter in the film, Derek expressed a newfound desire for a daughter.
“I’ve always loved kids. I always know that I will want kids, that’s why I’m very very close with Elias. I always say na I want another boy with Ellen, but everybody’s wishing for a girl para sa amin but spending time with Erin I’m leaning more towards now on having a baby girl pero kawawa because I will be really protective that’s for sure. Will I be the same kind of father? I don’t know how to answer that but l’ll be the best father I can be.”
Written by Dodo Dayao and directed by King Palisoc for Quantum Films, “Kampon” also stars Zeinab Harake and Nico Antonio. It is part of the MMFF 2023 and will be in theaters nationwide starting December 25.
