WESM rates down in Feb

Average price of electricity in the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM) in Luzon and Visayas for February decreased to P6.09 per kilowatt hour (kWh) from last month’s P7.07 per kwh, according to the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP).

IEMOP said the almost 14 percent drop was mainly due to the return of several power plants in operation.

For the period of February 1 to 25, average power supply available in WESM hit 12,851 megawatts (MW), almost 6 percent higher from January’s 12,140 MW.

IEMOP said average demand for the period also went up by over 14 percent to 9,781 MW from 8,544 MW.

IEMOP noted an increasing trend in demand due to the warmer climate from March to June but said power supply is still generally sufficient, barring any major unplanned power plant outage.

The data collated by IEMOP only reflect the situation in the Luzon and Visayas grids as Mindanao is not yet fully connected to the WESM.
