MGen eyes offshore wind projects

Manila Electric Co. subsidiary Meralco Power Gen Corp. (MGen) expressed interest to join the offshore wind development bandwagon in the Philippines.

“There are huge tracts of offshore wind that are available in the Philippines but we are seriously looking at it. Most likely, we will be tapping some foreign investors,” said Jaime Azurin, MGen president and chief executive officer, adding the company.

MGen is also finalizing a number of on-shore wind projects being eyed in Northern Luzon and in an area near Metro Manila.

MGen has a gross capacity of 2,446 megawatts (MW) with power plants utilizing coal, natural gas, diesel and solar as fuel.

Upcoming projects of MGen are all solar power plants including a 75 MW in Baras, Rizal; 45 MW in Cordon, Isabela and another 68 MW in Ilocos Norte.
