DOE awards 10 ocean power dev’t contracts in 2019

Ten ocean power development contracts were awarded to various companies as of end-2019, data from the Department of Energy (DOE) showed.

Five of the 10 projects will collectively produce at least 26 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

The ocean power project with the biggest capacity is the 6 MW Gaboc Channel Ocean Energy Project of Adnama Power Resources Corp. in Surigao del Norte.

Four projects with capacities of 5 MW each include Bell Pirie Power Corp.’s Cabangan Ocean Energy Project in Zambales.

H&WB Corp. plans to build three ocean power projects with capacities of 5 MW each, two will be in Northern Samar and the other in Sorsogon.

Five projects have yet to finalize their capacities and are led by Deep Ocean Power

Philippines Inc. in Anini-y, Antique and in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro; Oceantera Energy Corp. in Capul, Northern Samar and; Poseidon Renewable Energy Corp. that is also building in Capul and San Bernardino strait that are both in Northern Samar.

All 10 are in pre-development phase. The types of ocean power technology to be used are not confirmed.

The DOE promotes ocean power development as this renewable energy is not present in the country.
