NEGROS-BASED GROUP: ‘Sugar supply has stabilized’

Sugar supply has stabilized after refineries produced volumes that are higher than expected, according to sugar industry stakeholder group Tatak Kalamay.

Tatak Kalamay,   a multi-sectoral group composed of producers, small farmers, agrarian reform beneficiaries, mill and farm workers in the sugar industry, cited records of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) which said total refined sugar stock stood at 228,000 metric tons (MT) for September to November, 91 percent higher than last year’s record at 119,000 MT during the same period.

Gerard Joseph Sarrosa, Tatak Kalamay spokesperson,  attributed this the “cautious” importation program of the government and the earlier-than-usual operations of sugar refineries.

“We are also fortunate that good weather was on our side, thus production is high in terms of purity which has led to better sugar output as well,” Sarrosa said.

Based on the Department of Agriculture’s monitoring of public markets in the National Capital Region, prevailing retail prices as of yesterday were at P95 per kg for refined sugar and P90 per kg for both washed and brown sugar.

SRA millsite monitoring showed composite price of raw sugar as of November 27, was at P3,442.22 per 50 kg (LKG) bag, up by 1.8 percent from November 20’s P3,380.56 per 50 kg bag.
